Pat in Glencoe

Who is Pat McElhinney?

I’m Pat McElhinney, a landscape photographer based in Fort William, in the heart of the Scottish Highlands — the self-styled “Outdoor Capital of the UK.”

My path here wasn’t a straight one. I spent 27 years in the Fire and Rescue Service, and before that, five years as a Marine Engineer in the Royal Navy, with deployments to the Falklands and the Gulf. My entire adult life was spent in one uniform or another. When I retired in 2019, I decided it was time to let the creative side of me grow — and that’s how My Highland Photography began.

What started with a handful of followers has grown into a community of over 300,000 people across Facebook and Instagram. This is where I share daily images and reels from my local cafes (usually with a good latte in hand) and from the glens, lochs, and mountains of the Highlands.

What I Photograph

Scotland is endlessly varied — four distinct seasons, dramatic light, and countless hidden corners. My work takes me from the remote ruins of Peanmeanach on the Ardnamurchan Peninsula, to the misty peaks of Glencoe, the industrial-heritage landscapes around Kinlochleven, the slopes of Ben Nevis, and across to the Old Man of Storr on Skye. Wherever I go, I’m drawn to images that capture both the history layered into this land and the quiet, restorative beauty it offers today.

Many of these places carry real weight — from the Highland Clearances to the Massacre of Glencoe — and I try to let that history sit alongside the hope and renewal you see in the landscape itself.

Beyond the Camera

Alongside my own shoots, I’m often out and about supporting local communities and businesses — from photographing estates and events around the Highlands to running photography competitions for local clubs. As an ex-firefighter, I’m a long-time supporter of the Scottish Burned Children’s Club, a charity close to my heart that relies entirely on donations to help children across Scotland who’ve suffered burns and scalds.

Why I Do This

Photography gave me a creative outlet after a career built on service to others, and it’s become a way to connect people around the world with the landscapes I love. Every print, calendar, and coffee bought helps fund the travel, gear, and time it takes to get to these remote spots — and it means more than you know.

When you buy one of my prints, you’re not buying a stock image or an AI creation. You’re taking home a real moment, captured in the Scottish Highlands by someone who loves this landscape and is privileged to call it home

I still get excited when the forecast promises mist over Glencoe or fresh snow on Ben Nevis. There’s always another sunrise to chase and another corner of the Highlands waiting to be photographed. If one of those moments ends up on your wall, I’ll consider that a privilege.

Thank you for being part of this Highland journey.

Pat
