Highland Cottage in Winter
This Highland Cottage Winter download captures one of the most evocative and iconic scenes in the Scottish Highlands. A solitary white cottage sits beneath the vast snow covered peaks of Glencoe, sheltered by a stand of pine trees, while a dramatic winter sky breaks overhead in shafts of light.
I took this photograph on a heavy winter’s day in Glencoe when a fresh snowfall had blanketed the entire valley floor. The white cottage — known locally as Lagangarbh — sits at the foot of Buachaille Etive Beag and has stood in this spot for generations. The contrast between the tiny, human scale of the cottage and the immense, snow covered mountains behind it tells the story of Highland life perfectly. The light was breaking through the storm clouds in dramatic shafts, catching the snow and the cottage roof in a way that lasted only minutes before the clouds closed in again.
This Highland Cottage Winter download is one of the most warmly received images in my entire collection. The scene speaks to something deeply emotional — the idea of shelter, solitude and resilience in a wild and beautiful landscape. It looks stunning as a large format print and is a particularly meaningful choice for anyone with Scottish heritage or a love of Highland life.
