Rannoch Moor Skies
This Rannoch Moor Skies download captures one of the most remote and elemental landscapes in the entire Scottish Highlands. A frozen loch sits at the heart of Rannoch Moor in deep winter — snow covered heather lining the shore, a chain of snow capped peaks stretching across the horizon and a dramatic blue and white sky reflected in the dark still water.
I took this photograph on a bitterly cold winter’s day when the temperature had dropped well below freezing overnight. Rannoch Moor is one of the last true wildernesses in Scotland — a vast, flat expanse of bog, loch and heather that stretches for miles in every direction with barely a tree or building in sight. Getting here in winter conditions takes commitment. The snow had transformed the moor into something almost Arctic in its beauty. The ice at the loch edge was thick and the heather was encased in frost and snow — creating textures and details that are only visible for a few weeks each year.
This Rannoch Moor Skies download has a bold, dramatic quality that commands attention on any wall. The rich blues, crisp whites and earthy tones of the frozen heather create a striking composition that works beautifully as a large format print. It is a particularly powerful choice for anyone who loves wild, remote Scottish landscapes or has made the journey across Rannoch Moor.
